Dear Marty,
All of my friends hate their jobs. All of them. Is there any job in which the employees are generally happy?
I’m pretty sure you already know my answer kid. No job is happy. It’s work.
But that’s not too helpful now is it? Let me say this. I have a belief that the jobs that look the most fun are actually miserable and the jobs that look the hardest aren’t actually that bad.
For instance, imagine being a famous singer or actor. A dream to most, right? BLEH. I couldn’t imagine a more miserable existence. Always performing like a circus monkey. Always having to talk to strangers. Always feigning happiness! Horrible.
But then take something like breaking rocks or being a garbage man. Seems like tough manual labor, and certainly not glorious in the conventional sense, but overall probably not that bad. Not much pressure in the breaking rocks profession. You can just get lost in the repetitive motion and let your mind drift onto whatever you want. And who doesn’t want to ride the back of a garbage truck? Get a nice early morning wake up, work for a few hours, and then have the rest of the day to yourself. You don’t even have to speak to your coworker. He’s on the other side of the truck and you can’t hear a word he says over the sound of crushing garbage. Seems pretty relaxing honestly.
No job is happy. Break rocks, kid.
Tired,
Marty
