Monopoly Was Created During The Great Depression To Motivate People To Get A Job

Every time I play Monopoly, I remember that it was created during the Great Depression. As the tale goes, the real estate trading game became very popular as it was a way for the destitute to escape and imagine a life in which they were wealthy and owned a lot of property. But I don’t think that was the game’s only intention.

After playing with my family over ThanksGiving it’s become very apparent to me that the creators of the game wanted to help motivate people to get a job.

They knew that the game would be an escape for people. But even more so, it would give people a reason to escape. It might take some longer than others but on average I’d say it only takes half of one full game before deciding that working in a factory in the middle of the winter without heat would be more comfortable than trying to make trade deals with your sister.

The Great Depression ended because the banker was caught stealing money when no one was looking.
