Stockholm Syndrome is defined as a condition in which hostages form a psychological alliance with their captors.
I’m not saying work is a hostage situation. But I am saying if you’re a cheerleader for your company then it definitely starts to look that way. Am I being too harsh?
Here’s how I see it: I hope each and every one of you likes what you do. I hope even more that the place you get to work is pleasant. But when it gets to the point that a person is openly and actively promoting their company on a consistent basis, well, it starts to feel like a cry for help. At the very least it feels like a cover up. An over correction. It seems like someone doing a performance. It’s a bunch of over the top antics to bury one’s true emotions either from one’s peers or more likely one’s self.
And that’s where it starts to feel like stockholm syndrome. It starts to look peculiar from an outsider’s view. Who’s making you say this? Did they hurt you? Are they threatening you?
When people say they “bleed” their companies colors, my fear is that this isn’t just some cute turn of phrase.
