How Do They Calculate Movie Box Office Sales?

Seems like a silly question, no? I mean even when it popped into my dumb head I swatted it away like a fly. Obviously they must have their methods and we should trust them. But then that pesky question popped back into my (still dumb) head.

Wait, actually how do they calculate total movie ticket sales and guarantee accuracy?

I mean, who is aggregating this data? There’s thousands and thousands of theaters across the states and that’s not even taking into account the worldwide sales. I just can’t stop thinking about all the little theaters and their dejected employees. I mean no disrespect but is there any employee that cares less than a movie theater employee. Now obviously the dude that takes the tickets isn’t the one in the back counting them up and sending an excel spread sheet over to some central governing body. But also, aren’t they?? And if not them, their boss then? A guy who used to be in their position. Listen, maybe I have this all wrong but, since I refuse to google it because it could dismantle my blog entirely, we’ll never know for sure.

I don’t want to get political but it kind of feels a lot like elections to me. You mean to tell me that I just have to go into some middle school gym that’s being monitored by some old retired ladies and that’s how the President of the United States is selected. Doesn’t feel super exact.

This issue matters zero and clearly isn’t on the same level as presidential elections but every year a new movie seems to break some old box office record and and it’s a big deal to many. The Avengers recently took down the Titanic. Or was it just a ploy to convince people that movie ticket sales are actually not down. Whoa.

Captain America for President.
