Cultradamus: When Do You Think We’ll Turn On Cardi B?

Welcome To The First Edition of Cultradamus. Much like Nostradamus, I am the predictor of all things culture. Let’s get started and see what we have in our pop culture future.

When it comes to celebrities and pop culture we only tell two types of stories: the ones where we build people up and the ones where we break people down.

There’s the green light – the universal approval of a celebrity or artist. Take Childish Gambino for instance. We’ve all, rightfully so, given him the green light to do and make what he pleases.

There’s also the red light – the universal disapproval of a celebrity or artist. Take Billy McFarland for instance. Everyone knows his name and everyone unanimously thinks he’s a dick.

Ironically, both the green light and the red light are the nice parts of the internet. Although mob mentality can be dangerous, there’s something comfortable about finding a common love or hate for a person with strangers across the country.

And thus, due to this agreement, these are not the signs I find interesting. The Culturadamus finds the examination of celebrities’ fickle position within public opinion to be way more exciting. Let’s examine those signs:

Work Zone
You can drive through a work zone, but you must proceed  with caution. If you’re entering a Work Zone, it’s mostly  because you’ve been overworked. Overexposed. There’s a bigger spotlight on you now and thus it’s easier to err in the public eye. Remember, fines are doubled in a Work Zone.

Cardi B
The Cultradamus hates to say it but Cardi is currently speeding into the work zone. Coming off of her unexpected Grammy win and a starring role in the most talked about commercial during this year’s Super Bowl, Cardi is having a moment. Unfortunately, I can’t help but feel in my gut that we are months away from turning on her.

Remember, these are not the opinions of the Cultradamus – these are just where the signs are pointing. I rather enjoy Cardi B. She’s funny, off the cuff, and has brought the heat on a few real hits. It’s just too “in-the-moment” for me to say she has any sort of staying power. She’s a fine rapper and I’ll even give it to her that she has improved since she first came on the scene but I don’t believe she’ll have the ability to transition when the music landscape moves beneath her feet. Also, it’s worthy noting that her famous “okurrrr” will became her nightmarrrrrre. What she built her career on will eventually be what takes her down.
