This has happened before. Actually I’d bet it happens more often that it doesn’t. But something about this year still feels a bit different. This feels like the longest halloween that never happened.
With Halloween not falling perfectly on a weekend, it technically straddles two different weekends. Now generally when it falls mid-week on a Wednesday people suck it up and celebrate on both ends of the week. But the fact that this year Halloween falls on a Thursday is disastrous. That means that by the time the second weekend comes it’s already November. Bleh, November, disgusting! And the looming nature of November forces people to convince their friends that the weekend before Halloween is the true Halloween.
Now this is where the problem lies. That first weekend was October 26th and October 27th. Absolutely unacceptable days to be dressing up. You want me dressing up as the latest internet meme on October fucking 26th. Take a hike. Ain’t gonna happen. Just can’t get in the costume mindset yet. Sorry but there is a small costume window and it’s 10/28-10/31. Any earlier than that puts you at risk of being the only one dressed up. Any later than that and people are already tired of the idea of costumes. That’s the costume sweet spot.
So here we go. Prepare yourselves as we head into the second weekend of the longest halloween where no one dressed up. I’m absolutely exhausted by the idea of Halloween. Haven’t put one costume on and I can’t wait until it’s over and I can go back to dressing up as person who works in advertising.
